Once a year the Islands gather at Pickataramoor to watch a game of cricket. The match is played by children from across the Islands, and they are joined by some of Australia’s finest sportsmen.
The Tiwi Ashes’ day is not just a cricket match it is a celebration of culture, food, community and music. It is the representation of the collaborations between students, staff and the community.
With the assistance of Macquarie Sports, children from over the Islands come together for sports clinics and games with the sports stars and dedicated coaches.
Integral to the day is food. Many of the Tiwi College staff are of Pacific Island heritage, coming from Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and the Solomon Islands. Spectators and players are nourished by the traditional ‘lovo’ and spit.
