Q1. What were your expectation and what were you discover on arriving?
I went into the visit with an open mind and was blown away by the whole experience. The whole trip was full of action and excitement and volunteering with the children was really rewarding and worthwhile.
Jason made the whole trip comfortable, easy, enjoyable and very fun – he was an exceptional host.
Q2. Did the trip meet your expectations?
The trip far exceeded my expectations. The accommodation, the activities/itinerary and the good work being done at the college made the whole trip extremely rewarding. Experiencing such a different environment than what I am used to, allowed a huge change in my perspective & outlook.
Q3. Was there enough interaction with the children and do you find it culturally interesting?
We spent each morning with the children in reading, literacy and other exercises and also spent time with them outside of the classroom with several activities. I felt there was the perfect balance between spending time with the children and time spent on other culturally enriching activities.
I certainly found the trip culturally enriching and interesting from start to finish.
Q4. Accommodation and transfers?
The accommodation was perfect, the aircon in the room and all basic necessities were perfect for what we needed. Jason was an extraordinarily good host, he did a lot of cooking and the food was phenomenal – especially the fish we had caught.
The transfer from Darwin to Tiwi was an experience in itself, flying in a small plane was a really exciting experience and a great way to see an aerial view of Darwin and the Tiwi islands. I thoroughly enjoyed the plane trip to and from the island.
Q5. Wilderness and nature experience? What was the highlight?
Jason took us to a lot of different areas on Melville Island including an amazing waterfall. It is a truly beautiful part of the world that is largely untouched by humans. It has a very tropical outback feel to it and we had a chance to: hold a crocodile that some of the boys from the college caught, got within 1m of a huge Buffalo, saw dingos, caught a huge variety of fish and saw wild horses.
The highlight was definitely going out on Jason’s boat and fishing for half a day. We all caught big fish and it was exciting to see crocodiles and buffalo etc along the river.
Q6. What did you think of the garden build to date?
The garden was really spectacular. I have never seen a garden with as many varieties of fruits/herbs/plants. We ate a lot of fresh vegetables etc out of the garden and it has been meticulously maintained. I think the kids having a chance to assist in maintaining the garden/learning about it is having a huge impact on their general learning and understanding.
Q7. Would you recommend the trip to others?
I would 100% recommend the trip to anyone who is considering it, all three of us from Macquarie that went did not want to leave and were absolutely blown away by the experience. I highly highly recommend this trip.
